Research shows that moving is one of life’s greatest stressors, and the cost can certainly add to that stress. Luckily, you don’t have to spend “an arm and a leg” to have a successful move and saving money will certainly lower your stress levels.

Here’s what you can do to save money on your move:

Have a Yard Sale

There is no reason to pay movers to transport things to your new home that you no longer want or need. Start sorting through your things well ahead of time, deciding what you’ll keep, donate, sell or throw out. Arrange to have a yard sale before moving day and make a little money on the things your neighbors can use.

Use USPS Media Mail® to Ship Records, DVDs & Books

If you have a lot of DVDs, records and/or books you can save quite a bit of money by shipping them through USPS Media Mail®. However, there are very strict guidelines that you must follow regarding Media Mail® boxes. Just make sure that what you’re sending qualifies for this service before you drop everything off at the post office.

Moving Off Season Will Cost Less

The summer months are very busy for moving companies, which means prices jump up. If you can control when you move, you’ll save quite a bit of money if you do it in the fall or winter. But if you have to move during the summer, schedule it on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday rather than on a weekend when the fees are higher.

Try to Get Free Moving Supplies

It makes no sense to pay for moving boxes if you can get them for free. Medical facilities like hospitals and labs have supplies delivered to them on a regular basis, which means they have high-quality boxes they will likely be throwing out. You may as well stop by to see if they would instead give them to you. While you’re at it, you might want to stop by your local hardware store because they too are constantly getting deliveries and would have empty boxes on hand. And, you can always ask friends and family who’ve recently moved if you can use their boxes.
